Penstemon digitalis 'Husker Red'

£11.50

grown as much for its dramatic foliage as for its elegant flowers. Deep reddish-purple leaves form a strong upright clump, providing bold contrast in the border from spring through summer. In early to mid-summer, tall spires of tubular, pale pink to white flowers rise above the foliage, drawing in bees and other pollinators.

This variety is more tolerant of cold and wet than many penstemons, making it particularly well suited to Scottish gardens. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil and will tolerate a little drought once established.

'Husker Red' is ideal for prairie-style planting schemes, mixed borders, or adding contrast among grasses and softer-toned perennials.

Sold currently in 2-litre pots.

  • Height & Spread: 80–90cm x 45cm

  • Position: Full sun

  • Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil

  • Flowering Time: June to August

Telegraph Top 20 Mail-Order Plant Nurseries

One of the Daily Telegraph’s Top 20 mail-order nurseries. The largest list of peonies in Scotland, ranging from herbaceous peonies, Itoh or intersectional peonies and tree peonies.

Gardens Illustrated 2019 Badge

One of Gardens Illustrated's 100 best plant nurseries in the UK: "Billy Carruthers is mad about peonies and has over 300 varieties on the nursery. In recent years he's exhibited them at the Chelsea Flower Show. However, they're just the tip of the iceberg for this nursery, midway between Glasgow and Edinburgh, Central Scotland"
